Gemmaine Walsh is a director and senior leader in the UK Government’s Communication Service. Appointed as Director of Communications Group in the UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE) in January 2017.
Since her appointment, Gem has led a major review of comms and has been responsible for transforming communications and establishing a new integrated comms group at the heart of the education department.
Gem advises ministers and the senior leadership board and is responsible for the Government’s comms strategy on education as well as the overall spend on marketing, comms and behaviour change campaigns and agencies.
This role builds on Gem’s expertise and experience gained across a career with communications roles in five UK government departments and for HRH The Prince of Wales at St James’ Palace. Gem has over 18 years’ experience leading and managing communications in high profile, political, complex and changing environments - both in the public and private sector - working at Board and Ministerial levels.
Between 2012 and 2017 Gem was Director of Marketing, Communication and Engagement at the University of Reading leading a global team. She led and delivered a multi-million-pound organisational transformation that included a new organisational design, complete rebrand and overhaul of the customer journey.
Gem’s leadership approach is one of collaboration, innovation, rigour, customer focus and commercial awareness. Gem is an alumnus of Henley Business School Advanced Management Programme.
